Stephen Douglas

Greatest Illinois Senator of all-time

[Stephen Douglas @StephDouglas7]

Uniformity in the local laws and institutions of the different States is neither possible nor desirable.

[Stephen Douglas @StephDouglas7]

@RealHonestAbe3 If I remember correctly, you once stated that "The declaration that all men are created equal applies to blacks as well as whites." If that doesn't scream abolitionist, I don't know what does!

[Stephen Douglas @StephDouglas7]

It is clear that Lincoln has an ally in Frederick Douglas in preaching abolition doctrines. He lacks consistency when speaking about the subject of racial inequality, and is not qualified to become a Senator!

[Stephen Douglas @StephDouglas7]

@RealHonestAbe3 It was an honorable attempt by you, but we all knew I was going to win from the start. I guess I'll be seeing you again in 1860, and with the same results. #Douglas1860 #Politics

I would like to thank Kentucky Representative John J. Crittenden for endorsing me in my campaign. #Reelection #VoteDouglas

[Stephen Douglas @StephDouglas7]

@RealHonestAbe3 The people of a territory can keep slavery out of it, even though the federal government has no authority to exclude it, by simply refusing to pass a slave code and other necessary legislation to protect slavery.

[Stephen Douglas @StephDouglas7]

@RealHonestAbe3 You are making an illegal attempt to overthrow state laws that exclude African Americans from states such as Illinois.

[Stephen Douglas @StephDouglas7]

@RealHonestAbe3 That is completely false. I am not for nor against slavery. #FakeNews

[Stephen Douglas @StephDouglas7]

@RealHonestAbe3 You're clearly an abolitionist after stating that the Declaration of Independence applied to blacks as well as whites. This is why I'm going to be re-elected by the Illinois State Legislature #DouglasForSenate
