This week in Hip Hop History!
If you’re anything like me, you’ve been glued to your tv watching the #ParisOlympics & Uncle @SnoopDogg’s side quests. But, did you know 26 years ago, he dropped his third studio album Da Game Is to Be Sold, Not to Be Told??
Today’s song of the day is “Love of My Life (An Ode to Hip Hop)” by @fatbellybella and @common. Today is my 7 year wedding anniversary and this song just felt right to listen to. When you think about this song appropriately being featured on the soundtrack for Brown Sugar, it fits perfectly. Both the song and movie have the same message. It’s about two people falling in love but being able to find that love through a mutual love of hip hop.

Today we highlighted “War In The Trenches” by #nige. The sound has a country element to it but with a touch of trap. Lyrically, he’s expressing the harsh conditions of his reality. It’s heartbreaking but it’s similar to many people’s experiences.
What did you think?

Today’s song of the day was “Deep Reverence” by @BigSean featuring the late great @NipseyHussle. Sean discusses his mental health. Our community has a history of stigmatizing therapy but we’re doing better. With artists like Sean talking about their experiences, it’s helpful for their audiences to hear.

For today’s song of the day, I chose “Redemption Song” by @bobmarley and @TheWailers. It’s been so heart breaking to see the injustices in the world presently. We’re actively witnessing and our government is financing a genocide. I’m not naive to think music will solve international conflicts but I do believe music has the power to make you feel inspired to do something about those conflicts. Bob Marley made music that moved a people, it seemed like an amazing moment that I wish I was alive to experience myself.
Do you find music as powerful as us?

When you look back at @MarvelStudios Black Panther film, it was a cultural phenomenon. But so was the soundtrack, Black Panther: The Album curated by @kendricklamar. It had hits like All The Stars by @sza and Kendrick as well as King’s Dead by @1future , Kendrick, @jayrock, and @jamesblake just to name a couple. It was an Afro-futuristic compilation of songs.
What was your favorite song on this project?

Before drill had the presence it does now in New York, there was @ROWDYREB3L and @Shmurda . Today I was in a big New York mood blasting “Computers.” I love the message behind it too. The social media gangsters can act tough behind the keyboard but wouldn’t have that same energy in person.

One of the man reasons I enjoy listening to @chancetherapper is that I relate to him in many ways. It feels as though our interests align most of the time. Coloring book was a great project with references to faith, sports, Harry Potter, and so much more of what I’m into. I felt represented in this project. Going to the tour was an experience I wouldn’t dare forget.

It’s not lost on me that last June, hip hop hadn’t hit #1 for the first time in like 30 years but in less than 2 weeks, most of the world is LOCKED IN for this Drizzy v K Dot bout. Hip Hop is alive and well my friends.
No dope on Sundays was a hell of a debut album. @CyhiOfficial who many circles allege has ghost written for Kanye, really took us to his church with this project. Being in the shadows of G.O.O.D Music, The Prynce emerged. We learn about Cy-Hi’s life from being brought up in the streets to making it out. The album opens with a sort of prayer and ends with one.
What did you think about this album? Wouldn’t it make for an amazing visual album?
