It is not just statins.

$26 billion a year in blood pressure and diabetes drugs. Three lines on this chart. Hypertension cases. Diabetes cases. Drug revenue.

All three are rising. Since 1990. Without interruption.

If you want to know whether statins are winning the war on heart disease, look at the scoreboard.

In 1990, almost nobody was on a statin. Today, 92 million Americans take one. That is more than one in four adults. $200 billion spent over 37 years.

Heart disease is still the number one killer on earth. 700,000 Americans die of it every year. The line did not move.

If statins were the answer, the answer would have worked by now.

Instead, pharma is posting record profits while the death count stays flat. Every year they expand the guidelines to put more people on the drug. Lower the LDL target. Widen the age range. Add new indications.

More prescriptions. Same deaths. But the quarterly earnings look great.

I need to tell you something that makes me angrier than anything else in medicine.

60 randomized controlled trials. 323,950 patients. Every cholesterol-lowering drug ever made. Statins. PCSK9 inhibitors. Ezetimibe.

One question. Did lowering LDL cholesterol make people live longer?

Look at the chart. Every dot is a trial. The red line is zero benefit. If these drugs saved lives, the dots would be above the line.

They are not. They reduced LDL by up to 80%. Nobody was saved.

But that is not what makes me angry.

What makes me angry is that millions of people believe they are safe because their LDL is low. Their doctor says "your numbers look great." They go home and never think about it again.

Meanwhile the 12 things that actually cause heart disease are silently building inside them. Nobody is checking. Nobody is testing. Because a cholesterol number gave everyone a false sense of security.

That is not a failure of medicine. That is a fraud.
