A16: Providing Access to EBs is an area of growth for me. Next yr I will plan lessons that consider the needs of EBs before teaching them. This will give them more of an opportunity to be engaged and participate in their learning. #MathforELLs#PISDell#PISDMathChat
@alaniz_belva This is very useful and applicable to all Ss including adults. Lessening stress and being given extra time will encourage the EBs to answer Qs/solve problems! Yay to a safe & caring environment! #PISDMathChat#MathforELLs#PISDell
@alaniz_belva Belva, I agree with your comment; setting math goals and acknowledging/praising the efforts EBs make can really help them feel like they are doing something RIGHT=building confidence #PISDMathChat#PISDell#MathforELLs
@hernandezvsa @CindyGarciaTX@EwingLearning @hernandezvsa I’m glad you posted this quote because it serves as a great reminder to teachers that we NEED to take the extra step of checking emo/social needs of our EBs, especially when work/assessments are given in a different language #MathforELLs#PISDell#PISDMathChat
A15: The use of dictionaries can help many EBs for next year. Of course it’ll take time to teach Ss how to use them, but it will pay off since they’ll have access to them at anytime for every subject. #PISDell#MathforELLs#PISDMathChat
A13: Knowing that making mistakes is OK is important in creating a caring classroom. EBs Taking a risk (whether they succeed/fail) should always be accompanied by praise from a teacher. If EBs feel safe to fail, they will be open to learning. #PISDell#MathforELLs#PISDMathChat
T3: I can use TPR as a way to review what the Ss remember. I can orally read out word problems while Ss stand up and show the symbol needed to solve (+,-) with their arms. They will need to listen to key vocab words. #PISDell#MathforELLs#PISDMathChat
A9-For Writing, I can have the Ss work in groups to solve math probs and give the option of writing how they solved OR drawing the steps they used to solve question. Also, I can add Word Prob to my math lessons that the EBs can relate to. #PISDell#MathforELLs#PISDMathChat
A5: Previously I did assume that math is a universal language, but I have since then, realized that we assume this because numbers are numbers. The difference is WHAT we are required to do with numbers that sets it apart; Language plays a role #MathforElls#PISDell#PISDMathChat
