It was great joining Njideka Akunyili Crosby — a gifted Nigerian-born, Los Angeles-based artist — to unveil our first portrait together. This piece reflects so many chapters of Michelle and my story, and we’re thrilled that it will be on display in the Hope and Change lobby at the Obama Presidential Center starting this Juneteenth.
Hi, I’m a pregnant OBGYN and I take a baby aspirin every day to prevent preeclampsia and I take Tylenol as needed for pain and headaches. I refuse to put myself at higher risk for hypertensive disease, which is common in Black women, or suffer in pain for 40 weeks.
Mi abuela me pidió que fuera su contacto de emergencia. Yo tengo 23 años. Nadie más quiso asumirlo.
El cardiólogo explicó la cirugía.
Riesgo alto.
Beneficio incierto.
La familia evitó decidir.
—Lo que diga el médico —repetían.
Mi abuela no quería la operación.
Lo dijo frente a todos.
—No quiero despertar conectada a máquinas.
Firmé su voluntad anticipada con ella.
Días después un tío intentó revertir el documento.
—No estaba en sus cabales —argumentó.
El hospital revisó todo.
Mi abuela fue clara.
Consciente.
Libre.
No hubo cirugía.
Murió en casa, sin dolor, con música suave.
Parte de la familia dejó de hablarme.
Dicen que no luché lo suficiente.
Yo sé que cumplí lo único que pidió.

Women often fawn to survive men. Just to move out of their reach safely. Like a woman smiling (visibly uncomfortable) when you are creeping her out but she doesn't want to get punched, shot or stabbed.
She isn't flirting, she isn't leading you on, she is trying to SURVIVE this encounter. YOU put her in this position.
Ahhhh, my favorite Texas tradition: if Ted Cruz is seen in the state during January, it means spring is coming early. If he isn't seen, it means six more weeks of winter.
I had a friend who used to call me at 4am crying about her boyfriend. I’d wake up, listen, let her vent, and then go back to sleep, more than once. One night I couldn’t sleep, so I thought I’d return the favor and called her at 4am. She answered and told me she was sleeping, & I should call back tomorrow. Moral of the story: always remember that energy you give isn’t always going to be reciprocated—set your boundaries, even with “friends.”
