I love watching the show, “Monsters Inside Me,” which is about parasites.

While listening to an episode, I heard something that caught my attention — “Ivermectin.”

Dr. Geza Teleki contracted onchocerciasis (river blindness) after being bitten by a black fly in Sierra Leone.

While he was first prescribed a drug to kill the larvae in his body, Onchocerca volvulus worms can live for up to 15 years in humans.

He suffered for 5 years as the worms spread throughout his body, including his eyes.

In 1985, Dr. Martin Wolfe gave him an experimental drug & Geza became the first American to be treated with Ivermectin.

After a week, Geza was examined by an eye physician; to both of their surprise, the worms were dead.

“I will always be grateful for what [Dr. Martin Wolfe] did to deal with this river blindness.”

Remember when the media when on a rampage to discredit Ivermectin & even try to simplify it as just “horse dewormer”?

Scientists William C. Campbell and Satoshi Ōmura received the Nobel Prize for their discovery of avermectin, which led to Ivermectin— the cure to river blindness.

the kalman filter is one of those ideas that shows up everywhere once you understand it.

robots.
drones.
self driving cars.
sensor fusion.
tracking.
navigation.
control systems.

the problem is simple:

your sensors are noisy.

gps is not perfect.
imu drifts.
encoders slip.
cameras lose track.
lidar gives uncertainty.

so the system has to ask:

what do i think is happening?
and
what did the sensor just tell me?

the kalman filter sits between those two.
prediction + measurement = better estimate.

it predicts the next state using a model.
then it looks at the noisy sensor reading.

then the kalman gain decides how much to trust the model vs how much to trust the measurement.

that is the whole loop:

predict.
measure.
update.
repeat.

this is why it is so powerful in robotics.
a robot does not get clean truth from the world.
it gets noisy signals and has to estimate reality in real time.

the kalman filter is basically uncertainty management.
not guessing.
not blindly trusting sensors.
not blindly trusting the model.

just continuously correcting belief as new data comes in.

that is what intelligence in physical systems looks like:
build a model of the world.
observe reality.
measure the error.
update the belief.

In January 2020, a randomized clinical trial published in JAMA found that six active sunscreen chemicals — including oxybenzone and avobenzone — absorb into the bloodstream after a single application. They told you the sun causes cancer. What they didn't tell you:

Vitamin D — produced only through direct sun exposure — is the single most critical regulator of immune surveillance against malignant cells. A 2023 meta-analysis confirmed: Vitamin D deficiency correlates with a 30-60% increased risk of colorectal, breast, and prostate cancers.

They blocked the one thing your immune system needs to fight cancer. Then sold you a chemical that enters your blood and mimics hormones. Melanoma rates have increased 320% since 1975 — the exact period sunscreen use became widespread.

The paradox is published. McGill University, 2023: "Sunscreen usage is climbing, but so are melanoma and skin cancer rates."

They didn't protect you from cancer. They removed your defense against it and charged you $14 a bottle.

15 minutes of direct sun daily. No screen. Arms and face exposed. Your body produces 10,000-20,000 IU of Vitamin D in that window — the amount they sell you in pills because they blocked the free version.
