‘Yartiza’ is a faceless doll or as known in the Dominican Republic, Muñeca sin Rostro. Muñecas sin Rostro are a traditional handicraft made in the Dominican Republic by rural artisans. These dolls are typically crafted from fabric straps and are intentionally left without a face. The lack of a specific facial expression allows the dolls to be interpreted in various ways.

These dolls are often associated with the Dominican Republic’s Afro-Caribbean heritage and are sometimes used in religious ceremonies and festivals, particularly those with Afro-Caribbean or African roots.

They are an important part of Dominican culture and history, reflecting the country’s African cultural influences and long tradition of traditional handicrafts.

While the dolls are popular among Dominican tourists, the tradition of making them is in danger of fading away as younger generations are more drawn to modern technology and urban lifestyles. Nonetheless, organizations such as the Foundation for Self-Sufficiency in Central America and the Caribbean are working to preserve the tradition by providing training and resources to artisans and promoting the dolls as an important part of Dominican heritage.

The name Yaritza has Taino roots which are the indigenous people of the Caribbean. In the Taino language, the name Yaritza means “small butterfly.”

This piece was created to pay homage to the rich history of the Muñecas sin Rostro in the Dominican Republic for the ¡Lets Vamos! #LETSVAMOS #TEZOS event that is meant to celebrate Latin@ and Iberian Artists #LatinoArt
