@buckadeath The woodpeckers whose tongues were "normal" shook their brains to bits when wood-pecking, which made them become rather stupid, so they couldn't then work out how to make baby birds.
@edmtthws@wtgowers The first time my father (a medieval scholar) could not help me with a maths problem was in explaining why a 4/3 factor appears in the formula for the volume of a sphere. I vividly remember how surprised I was.
@Renet29304 I have used Mathematica for decades. Nowadays its most useful benefit for me personally is that it allows me to be very productive long after I normally would have “hung up my boots”.
@SamuelGWalters My theory calculations are always grounded in whatever physical system I am describing. I use delta functions sloppily because “notation is a tool of thought”, so they are a convenient shorthand for the actual physics, which might be Gaussians, or whatever.
@Lucy_Worsley I memorised the English translation of Caesar's Gallic Wars before my Latin O-level exam, then I translated a sentence or two of the passage quoted in the exam paper, then I filled in the rest from my memorised version. I walked out of exam room smiling.
@hsu_steve Experiment and theory have a symbiotic relationship to each other. I find that experiments sometimes discover unexpected emergent properties of self-organising networks, which then focusses my attention on proving how these particular properties emerge.
@PhysInHistory The phrases "cosmic computer simulation" and "application of the laws of physics" mean the same thing to me, so the answer to your question is "yes".
@EliotJacobson@volcaholic1 When I was 9 years old I memorised π to 16 decimal places from "Mathematics for the Million" (Lancelot Hogben, p261). I was horrified to discover a few years later there was an error in the 13-14th decimal places, which STILL causes me to stumble at that point in the expansion!
@fesshole I had the same problem. I fixed it by buying an expensive fountain pen, so I felt that I had to use it regularly to justify the expenditure. It took me several months to get my handwriting back to an acceptable standard.
