We are talking a lot about fire doors next week, but here is another problem that effects fire compartmentisation in schools - Breaches. This is when the compartment has a hole in it. There are several reasons breaches exist - poor design, poor workmanship & lack of oversight.

So if you see any of these - please release the fire door so it can do its job. You may think that wedge does no harm but it can permanently distort the door. We have seen schools where every door was wedged - when removed <30% closed properly. Fixing this will cost a lot.

Ever wondered why fire doors have these blue circular signs on them? The colour and shape tells you it is a mandatory sign - e.g. you must do as it says. This isn't an optional choice. It is a legal requirement - but why? >>
