I think some of the instigators of this manufactured panic have to answer the question, what are they getting out of this??
As for the people going to protests, I don't think you're far right, I think you've just been sucked into the moral panic because of concern for children.
@biffo_32@MrJohnWick03b3@Toibin1 I don't think you're getting my point. There are clearly men out there who don't care what happens after they get their end away. Otherwise there wouldn't be so many single parents.
It takes two to make a baby and only one to decide whether that process is completed.
@biffo_32@MrJohnWick03b3@Toibin1 You're criticising any person who decides to have sex without a contraceptive/protection. Do we then apply the same criticisms to anyone who contracts an STI?
People don't usually set out to procreate when they have sex. It's just one outcome of the act. Contraceptives or not.
@biffo_32@MrJohnWick03b3@Toibin1 That's great and fine for you and your wife. And probably for the extreme majority of couples, FWBs, and one night stands.
It doesn't take away from the fact that if a person finds themselves pregnant and can't/doesn't want to give birth they should be able to access an abortion.
@RightInCorduroy I think some of those 10,000 went to other countries.
Some timed out of being able to legally access the services.
The 3-day was a fig leaf to try to appease the pro-birthers and the other concerned people.
I think they're right to be concerned considering the services dont work
@biffo_32@MrJohnWick03b3@Toibin1 Lastly, it's also worth saying that the same could be applied to men. 'I'll just have sex the way I want and she can deal with it afterwards'.
@biffo_32@MrJohnWick03b3@Toibin1 I never said that.
I pointed out that those are some of the circumstances where a person will decide they want an abortion.
At the end of the day, it's legal here. We need MUCH better access for people who need/want them.
We shouldn't put barriers to make ourselves feel better.
@biffo_32@MrJohnWick03b3@Toibin1 I never said they were all forced to have unprotected sex. I'm just saying that contraceptives are not always considered when people have sex, it's not always chosen or accepted, and the pill isn't always effective. If you've got research on the %s I'd be willing to see it.
@Niall_Boylan A FIFTH don't want a poll ever?! That's disappointing.
I think that there is so much work that is needed to take down the physical and metaphorical walls between communities in NI that it will take (yet another) ten years to get to a poll that we could actually win.
@biffo_32@MrJohnWick03b3@Toibin1 I'm glad you said that. I agree.
Not every man will accept a no, and not every woman can/will say no in the moment. For whatever reason.
We can keep fencing over specific circumstances, the bottom line is that abortion being legal, safe, and free is a good and necessary thing.
@biffo_32@MrJohnWick03b3@Toibin1 Whether someone does, or can, take the morning after pill is A0 up to them, and B) not always effective if they do.
It is always ONLY that persons choice if ever and whenever they do that.
There can also be medical reasons that a person can not taking the pill, albeit uncommon.
@biffo_32@MrJohnWick03b3@Toibin1 Abortion as contraception is a ridiculous tagline. When asked, most women say that they couldn't have their child at that time for numerous reasons. 'It was unplanned', 'it's the wrong time in my life', whatever the reason is only relevant to the person and their doctor. Not us.
@biffo_32@MrJohnWick03b3@Toibin1 I'll do my best. You don't want the three day wait to be removed. Do you want free and safe access to abortion in general?
@biffo_32@MrJohnWick03b3@Toibin1 Again, this isn't even a good comparison. Some retailers would consider a refund or replacement in that scenario. I had to have my drill replaced a year after I bought it. The retailers policy gave me an instant replacement.
Do people need a receipt for conception?
@MrJohnWick03b3@biffo_32@Toibin1 Mrs Wick, you're perfectly right. Then they'll go and get a test and hopefully it confirms one way or the other.
Biffo, you're being really stupid.
The point was/is that the three day wait can be the decider of whether a person can/can't have an abortion when they NEED/want one.
@biffo_32@MrJohnWick03b3@Toibin1 I'll rephrase it. People don't always know they're pregnant in time for them to still have an abortion. So the three day wait is a unnecessary and illogical fig leaf to keep the opposition getting too upset.
@biffo_32@MrJohnWick03b3@Toibin1 Not every person knows they're pregnant at the moment of fertilisation. Don't be dense.
Also, you can't return shoes if you've worn them outside.
@MrJohnWick03b3@EV6816@Toibin1 Mrs. Wick: Yes. They should be able to have an examination, talk through every option, be given the choice to go ahead there and then or not, and it should be free.
The alternative is people leaving Ireland, getting back alley drugs, or feeling forced to have a baby.
