After trauma on this scale, support can’t be short-term or treated like a box-ticking exercise. #Families need sustained, trauma-informed help that’s easy to access, properly funded and shaped around what recovery actually takes.

We welcome this new #research from @scotwomensaid on how coerced debt can follow survivors “like a shadow”.

Some #women described being pushed towards illegal money lenders under extreme financial pressure, exposing them to further intimidation, fear and escalating debt. Commissioned by @SLSEngland and @TSScot, the #report underlines the link between domestic abuse, poverty and financial exploitation and the need for safe, practical, non-punitive routes to support.

Survivors should not carry the financial consequences of abuse. Systems must act.

These figures are deeply concerning.

New @NSPCC reporting shows a sharp rise in #children being blackmailed over sexual images. Childline sessions about #onlinesexualabuse and #exploitation rose 36%, with blackmail mentioned in 1,043 of 2,444 sessions.

Reported tactics include financial sextortion and threats using #AI to manipulate #images.

This is a fast-moving safeguarding threat and it needs urgent, coordinated action from platforms, policymakers, schools and parents.

Our new research report, “It’s always there, like a shadow behind you”: Women’s Experiences of Coerced Debt and Recovery in Scotland, calls for urgent action to ensure survivors are no longer forced to carry the financial consequences of abuse.

Key recommendations include:

• A national public awareness campaign on economic abuse and coerced debt
• Embedding economic abuse within Scotland’s Equally Safe strategy
• Recognising economic abuse across the justice system
• Creating a Scottish Coerced Debt Relief Scheme to pause, reduce or write off public debts caused by abuse
• Mandatory training across banks, utilities, councils and justice agencies to recognise and respond to economic abuse

Economic justice means believing survivors and ensuring they are not left to shoulder the financial consequences of abuse.

Judicial training on domestic abuse used to be a closely guarded state secret. A new step forward in transparency was announced today, with the Judicial College making this information public for the first time. I've long called for better training - and greater transparency on domestic abuse training across the judiciary and legal profession.
