في كل مرحلة سياسية جديدة لمنطقة الشرق المسلم المتخيل، يجري استدعاء المخيال الاستشراقي القديم، ويوصف كشرق فانتازي، يعيش على الجواري والشهوة والغرائز المنفلتة والجمال والصحراء وبشر تتهش اللحم بأيديها.

ذاكرتنا قريبة كيف تعامل العالم مع تنظيم داعش، وحول من جماعة أيديولوجية مسلحة إلى مادة فانتازية عالمية كتجسيد للشرق المتوحش والشرقيين حيث السبايا، الجنس، الذبح، الطقوس الدموية، والخطاب الديني المتطرف. ورغم أن منطقتنا عرفت لعقود طويلة دكتاتوريات ومجازر وأنظمة قمعية أودت بحياة مئات آلاف البشر، إلا أن جرائم داعش حظيت بتمثيل رمزي وإعلامي يفوق بأضعاف حضور جرائم أكثر اتساعاً واستدامة. ليس فقط بسبب فظاعتها، بل لأن التنظيم انسجم بصورة شبه مثالية مع الخيال الغربي المسبق عن الشرق الإسلامي.

أكيد داعش كان كيان خارج فكرة الثقافة أساساً، كيان فانتازي، اكستريمي، نهايته خلقت منذ لحظة ولادته لأنه تنظيم قائم على الأداء الاستعراضي للعنف أكثر من قيامه على مشروع تاريخي قابل للحياة. ومع ذلك انبهرت فيه شريحة مأزومة في المنطقة رأت فيه وهم للقوة والطائفية، كما انبهر فيه المخيال الغربي الذي رأى فيه الدليل الحي على صحة الصور الاستشراقية القديمة.

اليوم، وللأسف، تتكرر البنية السردية نفسها بطرق مختلفة ويتم تشبيه النظام السوري الحالي بداعش في كل حين رغم أن التاريخ والقاموس الحقيقي واسع لقائمة طويلة من المقاربات. لكن في كل اتهام أو حادثة أو إشاعة فوراً يتم ربط ما يحدث في سوريا بحكايات السبايا والجواري والجزية وأهل الذمة وألف ليلة وليلة، وكأن البلد لا يمكن تخيلها إلا من خلال هذا القاموس الشبقي العنيف. وللأسف بدلاً من تحويل أي انتهاك إلى قضية حقوقية أو قانونية تخص الأفراد المنتهكين أو المجرم، يجري تحويله إلى اتهام ثقافي يطال طائفة أو جماعة كاملة لتحريك الذاكرة العاطفية والاستشراقية لدى الغرب، على أمل إنتاج تعاطف دولي يمكن أن ينتج تدخل دولي، الحلم الأقصى لهؤلاء الحكائين.

Now there is popular unrest in the city. Kurdish residents have torn down the sign.

Syria was the litmus test. The Academic Left, which made solidarity its vocation, failed it.

In How the Academic Left Failed Syria, Sarah Al-Saeid explores how the post-Saidian academy turned sacrifice and critique into forms of victory in themselves.

Said's Orientalism was once a tool, but over time calcified into a reigning orthodoxy of recursive critique. It seeped into the groundwater of public discourse, surfacing in vertical video and social media threads, in the moral grammar of protest movements, and even the intuitions of educated publics who have never read a page of Said yet think in categories his work made available.

This culture of critique is divorced from any viable political imagination, sanctifying suffering as the only proof of moral seriousness, and the demand to resist, and keep resisting, a form of coercion that denies those it claims to champion the right not to die.

This denial has material consequences, with a name, a geography, and a death toll. Syria was one of the few moments in the modern Levant where action, messy and fragile as it was, successfully broke free from the gravitational pull of endless critique. Yet it was precisely Syria's complexity that allowed the Academic Left to look and turn away.

Syria's liberation from the Assad regime on 8 December 2024 has exposed the flawed moral logic of the Academic Left and requires a reckoning.
