We are currently in the "Professional AAU" era of college athletics. Colleges and Universities being treated like AAU programs. But this is what @JayBilas and others wanted. I couldn't agree more with @davidaldridgedc below, would help the mid majors immensely.

I am rapidly coming to believe the European soccer transfer model should be adapted for NCAA D1 hoops. Mid- and low majors have to get some kind of compensation when they lose half of their teams to the portal in two weeks:

If a coach leaves, of course the athletes should be able to explore other options. A player transferring out of a bad situation. No problem. But there's thousands of kids in the portal, are they all in bad situations? Or are they looking for highest bidder? @MedcalfByESPN

Its 100 percent different. Will Wade is the exception. Most coaches move on after they have spent years building a program. They are professionals with college degrees. A student athlete transferring 4 times in 4 years is not even close to the same thing.

Will Wade, who wants to leave NC State after a year, is allowed to do this. That’s just the reality, whether you agree or not. Also, a 19-year-old athlete, who wants to leave after a year and go to a place where they feel comfortable, can do it, too. Don’t tell me it’s different.
