Faith, family, farming. Husband to a beautiful wife, father of 5, Field Agronomist for Pioneer in NW Iowa. My opinions are my own and not of my employer.
Most fields are in the yellow R3 milk stage which means about 36 days until maturity. Looking like lots of mature corn this year by mid September. Drought conditions will accelerate that.
CRW beetles are starting to emerge. That puts adult management (aka beetle bombing) 14-20 days away.. Insecticide applications in the next week will miss most of this years beetle crop. Timing is everything!!!
Take some time this week to evaluate your planter performance! Check depth/sidewall/furrow quality across each row of the planter & make notes in your planter cab notebook! Rows between the duals may need to be a notch or two deeper!
When striving 4 80+ bu/ac beans, uniform emergence is as important in soybeans as corn.
2019 Emergence Study showed beans that emerged in 1st 3 days had 46 pods/plant & 27 3 bean pods. Beans emerging after that only 37 pods/plant & 19 3 bean pods.
2020 data below w/pod weights
If you’re planting a crop this Spring, watch the video @Bean_Doctor and I made with Porters Ag Solutions. Great info on maintenance, upgrades, and set up! Link is below.

Yes, soybean seed size matters A LOT in determining final soybean yields. Having 500 seeds/lb less can add about 11 bushels/A or 500 seeds/lb more can take about 8 bushels/A on 55.7 Bu/A 3,000 seeds/lb beans. https://t.co/RIjL4PxUia @PioneerSeeds
Gall midge showing their ugly faces in our show plot at @dordtuniversity farm. Hoping to see some positive results from the tests that are being done in conjunction with @AMVACChemical.
Captured my first #soybeangallmidge adult in Ida County, Iowa today! June 12th, 2020. Emergence cage was placed over last year’s soybean stubble. Stay tuned for more adult emergence action!
Numerous calls on purple corn last few days.. Its a function of fluctuating temps and not being able to translocate all the sugars produced from photosynthesis. Will disappear in a few days!! Also good pic of reminder to get spraying!
