A ballhandler is entitled to continue along an open path until a defender legally establishes position in that path.

A defender cannot arrive late, extend a hip, shoulder, arm, or leg into the driver’s path, or move underneath the player after the player has begun the upward shooting motion.

In all guarding situations, a player is entitled to any spot on the court they desire, provided they legally get to that spot first and without contact with an opponent.

If a defender is able to establish a legal position in the straight-line path of the dribbler, the dribbler must avoid contact by changing direction or ending their dribble.

A defensive player is not permitted to move into the path of an offensive player once that offensive player has started their upward motion to attempt a field goal or pass.

Contact initiated by a defensive player guarding a player with the ball is not legal.
