She refused to speak Russian in captivity — even under torture. This is the story of a Ukrainian Marine medic who survived hell and lived to see love waiting for her on the other side.

Halyna Fedyshyn is a combat medic with Ukraine’s 36th Marine Brigade. At Azovstal, she treated wounded defenders under relentless bombardment. In captivity, she became the last female Marine from the Mariupol garrison to be released.

In Olenivka, she was held without proper medicine or basic hygiene. Prisoners ate porridge crawling with worms, rationed every drop of water, while sewage flooded the corridors.

When Halyna’s weight fell dangerously low, her captors began forcing her to eat an extra portion of porridge — food her exhausted body could barely tolerate.

Then came a Russian prison. Moldy bread tore up their stomachs. Women were forced to use scraps of cloth instead of sanitary pads. Their scalps itched, their skin peeled.

Guards forced prisoners to learn the Soviet song “Katyusha,” beat them for violations, and subjected them to painful stress positions for hours.

But Halyna said one of the most unbearable things was not even her own suffering — it was hearing the screams of fellow Ukrainian prisoners being tortured in neighboring cells. It could drive a person insane.

Her beloved, Mykola, was also a prisoner of war. Russian security officers allegedly tortured him in an attempt to extract confessions to crimes he had never committed.

After severe abuse, he was hospitalized with broken ribs and internal bleeding. He spent ten days in intensive care — and was then sent back to Olenivka.

In January 2024, Halyna was taken from her cell. She thought it was just another transfer. Then she heard the words: “The woman first.”

She understood.

Then came the prisoner exchange. The flight. The tape removed from her eyes.

And finally:

She embraced her family — and then Mykola.

Later that year, they married. ❤️

A difficult rehabilitation and surgeries followed. Halyna became a voice for Ukraine, telling the world about what Ukrainian prisoners endured in Russian captivity.

And she says:

“I cannot be happy while the last prisoner has not yet returned home.”

Waiting for her at home was Dora, a Labrador — a dream Halyna and Mykola had shared. Mykola got the dog while Halyna was still in captivity, and Dora helped him through one of the darkest periods of his life.

Halyna Fedyshyn’s courage is a reminder of what Ukrainians have endured — and of those who are still waiting to come home. 🇺🇦
