As someone who didn't serve, but has been close with A LOT of those who did, this is an expression of honor and respect for what you sacrificed that I did not, and that you didn't HAVE to. I have come to understand what combat vets experienced in their service, and that carries much weight for me, but doesn't mean if you weren't there, you dont deserve honor. You served. So always, thank you for your service. I don't require a response. A nod is fine.
