The California primary is over, but its lessons could shape how Democrats approach 2028.
Progressives and the establishment both put forth fallback options, but only Xavier Becerra inspired a wining coalition.
He won’t be president, but my @Newsweek cover story unpacks what Democrats who want to be could learn from his campaign.

I called CA Senate Rules Committee for the per diem rate for state lawmakers. They said I had to call Senate HR. HR declined to answer and said to call Senate Operations. Operations said I had to put my Q in writing in an email before they would answer. This is not transparency.
@john12782 Your tweet is completely false. In fact @fionama led the charge for the reciting the Pledge when she served on the BOE and proudly continues to stand and recite the pledge.
“…the top two…has happened in about one of every six state legislative or congressional races since the top two was implemented” @PPICNotes https://t.co/r4YSPrLMcN
@georgeandrews You’re even thinking about a socialist who won’t say the pledge of allegiance who hasn’t accomplished squat in a decade? https://t.co/U1aAvqViuP
New from me: Matt Mahan entered the CA gov's race pitching himself as the antidote to Sacramento’s dysfunction.
By the time polls closed in the June 2 primary, according to close to a dozen sources, his campaign had devolved into its own form of chaos.

California voters were lucky to have three quality candidates run for LG. Congrats to @fionama for the win and @JoshFryday@MichaelDTubbs for quality campaigns that focused on issues and solutions.
Here's the thing: A lot of people in CA would gladly vote for a Republican for Lt. Gov. as long as it was someone kinda normal. Romero is a batshit crazy.
Thank you, California. I am so honored to advance to the November General Election for Lieutenant Governor. I traveled across this state, sat with you, listened to your stories, and heard what matters most to your families. That is what got us here. This win belongs to all of you.
Our grassroots coalition is growing stronger every day and there is no stopping us now. Let’s bring this home in November together.
