Kagami biraki, which literally means "opening the mirror." In Japan, breaking open a large, round wooden barrel of sake and drinking it from small wooden boxes called masu is a beautiful tradition used to celebrate milestones, harmony, and good fortune.

Jim Morrison, 1968. Phone by Art Kane.
Kane shot Jim Morrison for Life Magazine's 'New Rock' photo essay within the confines of Morrison's room at the Chateau Marmont hotel in L.A. In a creative twist, Kane had an electrician relocate the television into the closet, instructing Morrison to kneel behind it and change channels. The final chosen image featured the enigmatic rock star with a blond starlet showing on the TV. Reflecting on the process, Kane recalled, "A light went on in my hotel closet when I opened the door. It cast a peculiar shadow, creating a lifeless chamber. Noticing the TV, I instinctively moved it into the closet. I envisioned Jim Morrison kneeling behind it, the tube suggesting an x-ray image of his nerve center—his thoughts."

John Lennon and George Harrison standing in the colorful doorway of George’s home, Kinfauns, in late May 1968.
The band had just returned from India with a massive backlog of new, unreleased songs. Looking for a low-pressure spot to figure out what they actually had, they all headed over to George’s bungalow to lay down some loose acoustic versions on his home four-track tape machine. Those casual, living-room recordings became the famous Esher Demos, which basically served as the rough draft for what we now know as the White Album.
