Helping students through tough, unexpected stuff as Associate Dean of Students @ Purdue. Prepped by experience in #reslife. he/him/his

When a student tells me they were denied a request because "they need to prepare for the real world" I respond by telling them they did right by requesting. Advocating for yourself is the best way to be ready for the real world. #sachat#highered
Every chance I get I share the importance of just adding those few words, "I care about you." Hopefully your university has a "student of concern" report; if it exists, it's likely through your Dean of Students. Bookmark it. #sachat#highered

When reaching out to students, add just a little message of care at the end.
"I noticed you haven't been to class this week" becomes "I noticed you haven't been to class this week. Just checking in because I care about you." #highered#college
@AdvisingAli I work in the dean of students and we send a just a few questions for a written response prior to a phone interview. This is the for the purpose of giving a bit more knowledge about our daily work and values, while also getting to know them a bit better as well.
Our students are still getting the message that asking for help or grace is somehow unprofessional or unacceptable. Not sure about the students you work with, but for mine this is growth! Self-advocacy is often a new behavior for them and I'm so dang proud. #sachat#highered
Add "rest well" or "get some rest" to your conversations with students, parents, colleagues. It's an easy affirmation of 1) I see your hard work and 2) rest is important.
Then remind yourself of the same.

"Are you thinking of hurting yourself?" does not equal "Are you thinking of suicide?" If you ask the first question, please ask the second regardless of the answer to the first. #suicideprevention#selfharm
Proud of our work sending outreaches to students whose homes are impacted by natural disasters or terrorist attacks; anyone else doing this or want to talk about how we do it? Doesn't make much work, but students feel seen and supported. #sachat#highered
@FutureDr_Ungaro Depending on where the difficulty is rooted may change the answer, but my role is defined by difficulty (crisis management... so 100% of the students I work with are in a difficult situation). I am INCREDIBLY grateful for my team and our ability to process togehter.
You do not need to know the answer before reaching out to offer help to a student or colleague. Your outreach might BE the answer -- particularly when it comes to loneliness or isolation. #sachat#highered
Dear @Lin_Manuel,
Thank you for compiling "Gmorning, Gnight!" My team does crisis work and I'm texting them screenshots at the beginning & end of each day.
Dear @TCPLTweets,
Thanks for letting us keep a hold of the books we borrowed until we make it to the other side of this.
Consider asking one question more; one question further:
-It shows that you care;
-It helps you provide better assistance;
-It just might help you save a life.

I absolutely appreciate the hours I can spend making forward progress on strengthening our advocacy work and equipping our campus partners to recognize and respond to concerning behavior. #sapro#highered
So the men's bathroom is closed on my floor and we're fortunate enough to have an all-gender bathroom on the floor as well. This has prompted two of our student employees to discuss genders and bathrooms and this is the happiest I've been about a broken toilet.
This morning I presented with police to our Community Standards Board panelists about the intersection of mental health and behavior that may result in conduct charges. It's these conversations that move us forward in providing the best support to our students. #sachat#highered
