@jp_gambatese Yup. Nico leads the devils in % dzone starts at 18.8% Compared to a guy like Nick Suzuki who’s 9th in dzone starts on the habs at 12.6%. That’s a whole 33% more defensive load on Nico compared to a guy like Suzuki
@MikeBartner Utica has also been pretty ass the last couple years. Anyways, if shit hits the fan, I think Mehta will make an in-season move, like Colorado did a couple years ago
@MikeBartner I think the analytics suggest that goalies are only worth it if they’re bonafide top 10 guys. Otherwise, the marginal benefit is subsumed by the inherent volatility of the position.
I’d also say Daws could be something. AHL sv% generally a pretty poor predictor of NHL sv%
@JMC9787 With one year left, I think cap implications are not as relevant. Devils could absorb his cap hit rn, and can still move off Noesen/Bjugstad/Dillon.
His 14 EV goals last year would be more than both Mercer and Brown, who were both top 6 players for the Devs last year
@jp_gambatese Like these targets, only concern for me would be the injury history for Turcotte and Karlsson (Devils traditionally have terrible luck in this regard)
Good article!
@jp_gambatese@pitchforkedpuck Agreed. Seems Mehta wants to flatten the center hierarchy, especially in terms of easing up Nico’s deployment. Wright is not that guy (yet)
I wonder about guys like Pius Suter, Sam Steel or Peyton Krebs. All fit the bill as versatile middle 6ers and unlikely to be very expensive
@LockedOnDevils It’s fine to be measured (we should all be more so)
Think you’re really underselling how much better the depth is though. The depth, and especially the 4th line was literally unplayable last year. Made it so Nico took every tough dzone draw.
@DylanZehne74847@JLazzy23 I mean, yeah, they’re still solid players right now but that’s way too optimistic of a prognosis. Injuries do typically happen more as players get older, especially for someone that plays JT’s game. Gonna end up like the Winnipeg jets
@Pete___Hughes As a devils fan who watched every game, I think it’s a fine contract for Nemo.
My eval of him as a player is that he can be elite, but is not a plug and play type of player. Needs a mobile defensive guy as his pairing who can be the primary pick retriever.
@northofstoney@jp_gambatese Nah, I think the new direction of giving 22 year old RFAs 5 years instead of 7/8 or a true bridge deal is good for both team player. Don’t mind this contract for Nemec
@andystrickland That’s kind of surprising. @FriedgeHNIC talked about how the relationship between Hayton and Utah had be deteriorating.
Pretty much a 1 year rental then
