At the beginning of September, he discovered a rustling in the bushes. It was a small hedgehog. Since that day I put food and water there once a day and it still is being eaten. Steve would have liked that. 😺🦔

I've just had a call from a lovely lady who had asked my advice this morning regarding a hedgehog she was worried about, and I hadn't replied.
Please be aware that because of the pile-on that Carl Bovis has initiated against me my notifications have been flooded with hundreds of nasty messages from his followers.
Aside from being upsetting it has made my work twice as hard, and finding vital, time sensitive, life-or-death messages among all the trolling, impossible.
So I've had to mute anything with his name on, which means I may miss some important messages.
So if you have asked advice and I've not replied, please ask again, leaving off any quote or reply.
If your need is urgent about a sick hedgehog please don't wait for me to catch up, just phone.
And thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for all your loving support and righteous indignation on my behalf. 🫂❤️

Sage, Petal&Maple are orphans. Sadly, their mum was killed by 2 Jack Russels & their nest destroyed. The finder managed to get the dogs off poor mum, but the babies could not be found in the dense undergrowth. Over 3 days, 1 by 1 these terrified Hoglets came out in search food😢

Anya's babies were born here on 10th June, so they're 3.5 weeks old now.
This is the exact age that most 'abandoned' babies come into rescue, and here's why.
It's 6.30am, the sun is up and it's daylight so mum has gone to bed for the day, (but it's still a bit too dark in the hospital for the cameras). She's in her own nest, away from her babies.
She's left her precious babies sleeping safely in the maternity nest for the day, to encourage their transition from diurnal to nocturnal, and to wean them off daytime feeds from her.
But for one little baby who should be asleep, it's just too exciting having ears and eyes that work, and teeth that are starting to erupt.
He just can't wait.
So with mum away, he sneaks out to have a little explore...
All what you see here is happening in the safety of the mother and baby unit here at the hospital.
But now imagine this happening in the wild.
How easy it is for the baby to take the wrong turn.
For mum not to hear.
For a human to come and pick the baby up before mum has a chance to retrieve him.
This is why it's so important that the first thing you do when you see a tiny baby out is to stop, stand still, keep your eyes on him from a distance, and ring a good rescue for advice.
They will ask all the right questions and will be able to remotely assess the situation, and advise what actions, if any, need to be taken.
Put the number of your local trusted hedgehog rescue in your phone now, ready, just in case.🥰

My original water tub was always so busy, with animals queuing up to use it, that I put out a second tub on the other side of the dried out stream.
That too was quickly mobbed by thirsty wildlife.
And of course my little squirrel photobomber found me.🥰

It may not seem like it some days, but I can tell you the world is still full of truly good people with kind, loving hearts.
There are people who see the broken hedgehogs here, and want to help mend them, so they send supplies from my Amazon wishlist, or donate towards the cost of medicines via PayPal.
Without being asked, without expecting reward or praise.
Without fanfare.
Every day I am reminded of the sheer depth of humanity that abounds, despite eager reports to the contrary.🥹

Although, knowing you, I'm sure this is a photo taken at night with some of your famous clever camera wizardry.😁
Unfortunately, to the rest of the world this looks like a hedgehog out in the day.
The point is - to anyone who knows hedgehogs (but doesn't know you) this is a horrible photo as it appears to be in the daytime and has been posed.
Usually the photographer either exploited a hedgehog in the wild by capturing her and cruelly forcing her to pose in the day time, subjecting this wild animal to enormous stress, or she's a sick and dying out-in-the-day hog who has been treated like a photo opportunity rather than the desperate casualty she is.
Either way, an UNNATURAL portrayal of a hedgehog. That's to people who know hedgehogs.
To the vast majority of the population it's just more confirmation that the sight of a hedgehog in the day is quite normal, they don't need to get help or do anything other than take photos.
I'm sure you never realised, posting this, but these 'daytime photos' are causing so much suffering and so many deaths.
Rescues are being inundated by hogs who have been seen out in the day FOR SEVERAL DAYS and only brought in when they have collapsed and cannot be revived.
Even if a photo was naturally taken at dusk in high summer, and appears to be in daylight, it is dangerous to reproduce this publicly without this explanation.
And the explanation has to be explicit - most people will miss the words "last night" in your post.
It's a huge problem, and the irony is it's being caused mainly by those who profess to know and care about hedgehogs and who invite the trust of the unsuspecting public.
I know you are a strong defender and advocate of our precious wildlife, Carl, so wanted to give you the heads up, and help inform your followers. ❤️

Wir haben hier wieder eine Hitzewelle mit ca. 34°C. Bitte denkt an die Wildtiere und stellt täglich frisches Wasser draussen, am liebsten in den Schatten. Insekten brauchen oft kleine Landeflächen, wie diese Steine hier, damit sie nicht ertrinken. Ich danke euch!😍👍
