Why do galaxies stop forming stars in the early universe?
Using NASA's JWST, Steward Observatory researchers Weizhe Liu and Xiaohui Fan report on an unprecedented number of exceptionally fast outflows from quasars that may quench star formation.

To the Class of 2026: the universe is yours. Congratulations!
Congratulations to all our students graduating today from our Bachelor of Science in Astronomy, Minor in Astronomy, Minor in Astronomical Studies, and Ph.D. in Astronomy & Astrophysics! We look forward to seeing the next steps you take in astronomy and beyond! #beardown
Lauren Jones is graduating this spring with a degree in Astronomy and a Physics minor. Alongside her studies, she spent three years at the Flandrau Science Center and Planetarium, teaching the Tucson community about astronomy. Next, she stays at UA for her Masters in Education.
Kari Shearl is graduating this spring with a BS in Astronomy. As a NASA Europa ICONS intern at Johns Hopkins, she performed 2D fracture mechanics models to investigate the potential for habitability on Jupiter's moon Europa. Next, she plans to pursue a master's degree.
Anna Brandigi is graduating this spring with a B.S. in Astronomy and Physics. They worked as a NASA Space Grant Intern studying a dust-hosting binary star system and mapped dense gas tracers in the Taurus Molecular Cloud. Next, Anna continues into an Astronomy Master's program.
Suhani Surana is graduating this spring with a triple major, including her BS in Astronomy! Her advice for aspiring astronomers? "Challenge yourself each day and work really hard towards your goals! Trust me, it is worth it." Read more: https://t.co/bhZT8H2xg6
Aleah Short is graduating this spring with a B.S. in Astronomy and Physics, with a minor in Mathematics. During her time at Steward, she mapped the Taurus Molecular Cloud and its gas kinematics, and charted the galactic plane in ionized carbon using brand new data.
Vadim Bernshteyn is graduating with his B.S. in astronomy. His advice for students? "Being an undergraduate student is a perfect opportunity to explore. You never know what would turn out to be the right fit." Next up, Vadim heads to Princeton! Read more: https://t.co/wRWUn33cIl
Emily Kelly is graduating this spring with a B.S. in Astronomy. She researched the Taurus Molecular Cloud using the ARO 12m telescope and will be the lead author on the resulting paper. This fall, she heads to the University of Calgary for graduate school.
Congratulations to Steward Observatory PhD Candidate, Sóley Hyman, for winning the 2026 College of Science Graduate Award for Service for the department of Astronomy! Read more about all of the awardees across the College of Science: https://t.co/8lnty5s7nX
Julien Barrosse is graduating this spring with a degree in Astronomy. He conducted radio astronomy research on HCN and HNC emission in the Taurus Molecular Cloud and got to collect data at a telescope on a snowy mountaintop. Next, he stays at UofA for an M.A. in Art History.
Emma Vertachnik graduates this spring with not one but three degrees — including her B.S. in Astronomy. As an undergrad, Emma researched the chemistry of star-forming regions and got hands-on experience operating the 21-inch telescope on campus. Read more: https://t.co/Y4qu86gCkC
