1/5 @NigelBiggar's equally beautiful/realistic word on the purpose of universities/the liberal arts:
"The Arts and Humanities not only introduce us to foreign worlds; they teach us to treat them well. They teach us to read strange and intractable texts with patience and care
My Thanksgiving highlight? Giving my little cousins Addison, Quinn, and Carter their personalized copies of @CivilWarJon's My Day with Abe Lincoln. Dr. White they wanted to tell you, Charlotte, and Clara happy Thanksgiving, and thank you for writing the book. #MyDayWithAbeLincoln
#OnThisDay in 1863, #AbrahamLincoln delivered the #GettysburgAddress at the dedication of a cemetery for thousands of US soldiers who died in battle. He praised the fallen and challenged the living to strive for freedom for all. #AbeSays

President-elect #AbrahamLincoln on his criteria for selecting the members of his cabinet. Many of his choices were powerful leaders who could have challenged Lincoln's authority, but Lincoln wanted the best people. #AbeSays#TeamOfRivals

The Adams Memorial Foundation is dedicated to commemorating the core values embodied by the Adams family. The goal is to build a memorial in DC to Adamses. Now is the time to reignite their American spirit and foster hope for our future by honoring them.

@KKriegeBlog What kind of stuff do you hear? I'm a public high school history teacher, so I'd genuinely like to know so I can make sure I'm not producing such horror stories, haha.
I'm not claiming to have the best props for @lmchervinsky's new book on #POTUS2, but my mini-Peacefield strengthens my case. This fantastic book (written by a true gem of a person) aptly demonstrates why J.A. deserves a national memorial (@AdamsMemDC). Seriously, buy this book!!
I second this point as a native North Carolinaian and public high school civics teacher... I stress this to my students frequently. Welcome to the wild ride known as NC politics.
@craigbrucesmith I bet the same listeners fund the Founders Chic. These simpletons are so unsophisticated that they'd buy another book on George Washington after seeing global in the title. (End scene; This has been my impersonation of a certain prof from CUNY 😉). In all honesty, huzzah!!!
We need the arts & great literature in school not because they improve STEM scores or encourage "critical thinking" (whatever that is), but rather because beauty inspires the soul toward nobility. Our lives teeter on the edge of pettiness & banality. We need the call upward.
1/2) A highlight of my summer was meeting Dr. Stephen Knott (@publius57) at @foundingforward's First Five Presidents summer seminar. As a long-time admirer, I knew Dr. Knott was a great scholar, but after meeting him, I now know he is an even better person and a tue joy to know.
@publius57@Kansas_Press "Retirement," which includes teaching for Ashland (and leading seminars), writing a new book, podcast interviews, and teaching/lecturing at various seminars like Founding Forward. Oh yeah. You stay retired sir 😉. #NonStop
