1/11 Who are we and what do we do?
Stickman Communications is a tiny company run by me (Hannah Ensor) and my PA. It started out as not-a-business-at-all - just me creating a few cards to help people understand my disabling #hypermobility and #PoTS without me constantly -
@LongCovidHell@namott As in: so many people believe that if you are immunocompromised you should wear a mask - then they have no responsibility to stay away. Having a stickman without a mask doesn't exclude anyone - but a mask would automatically exclude everyone for whom a mask isn't an option.
As it gets colder, we approach cold and 'flu season. Everyone feels horrible when they have a cold, but for people who's immune systems aren't up to speed, it can become a *very* serious illness. Please remember not to spread those germs around!

@namott@LongCovidHell not everyone can wear a mask - so from a communication point of view I don't want to increase the stigma against immuno compromised people who can't wear a mask.
-they reach 'uh oh' it is often when moving into something difficult and draining, but not harmful. So before telling a disabled person to push through - stop and think. They've probably already been pushing for hours/days/years - and maybe it is wisdom to stop pushing now.
This concept isn't understood - or talked about - nearly enough. Many disabled people spend very little time in our comfort zone, where things are easy. There are so many extra challenges to doing things, interacting, etc that if we are up and about, we are probably 1/3
pushing ourselves. So when we reach the point of 'uh oh' we are looking at real life consequences if we push further. But for a non-disabled person, more of their life is within their comfort zone - a zone where they can functioning easily and with little effort. And when - 2/3
With chronic illnesses, it's easy to see how a really busy day can cause a fatigue crash. But it's not so obvious that a stressor that we've been apparently coping ok with can cause an avalanche of symptoms when it is removed - read about an example here: https://t.co/4aVsfaq3Ox
This is a really important point. Life too sick to work is hard, constant, exhausting levels of effort. Yes, we have our good moments, and moments where we enjoy time with family/friends. But even these moments have their payback - an even worse level of symptoms than usual.
I'm not using twitter as much any more. I have also had to close my DMs as I was getting so much spam. If you need to get in touch with us, you can use: the contact form on our website, email, Facebook message, bluesky message, instagram message, or linkedIn message.
Enhance communication about pain with our leaflet, 'Pain: Common Misunderstandings Between Patients and Professionals'. This resource is designed for both patients and healthcare professionals! Find out more: https://t.co/Nj0ADlNjvW #PainManagement#HealthcareCommunication
As February ends we go back to basics. Every year brings new people starting to experience problems, or recently discovering hypermobility explains some health issues they're experiencing. 1/2
Dynamic can mean changeable, but when used about a person, dynamic literally means: positive in attitude and full of energy and new ideas.... how on earth is that going to effectively communicate that my debilitating fatigue varies? So many misunderstanding opportunities!
The current political term is 'dynamic disability' - but I still use 'variable disability'. Why? Dynamic has positive, active connotations - Applying those connotations to my fatigue just feels bizarre. So for now, you'll only find the 'variable' terminology on our products.
I easily forget important parts of #pacing because: life. So here's a reminder I needed today: stop and rest *while I could technically push myself further* - and do more later instead of doing crash and burn. I'm sharing with you incase someone else needs it too
@Laurenlondoner I know! Occasionally I've had a friend turn up and be a silent cleaning fairy. I'm in bed resting. Message from friend 'I'll pop in and leave the thing on the side for you', then I go get a cup of tea and the kitchen is CLEAN. it is the BEST.
I'm amused by how well today fits the 'pyjama day' in this cartoon. I've achieved a lot between naps, and #Pacing to a 30 minute timer when upright. I'm also still in my pjs and touseled. But by not spending energy on dressing I've maxed my productivity at other things. #fatigue
@shamingjezebel Of course - I'll be sharing it later this evening on bluesky, facebook, and instagram, so if your group is on any of those, I'd appreciate it if you'd wait and share my post with them (just cos I need to try and earn from my work, and that means people seeing my pages)
