I discussed this video on a podcast with archaeologist Elizabeth Wayland Barber recently, on the centrality of textile work to women’s lives in most times and places.

Women would spend hours a day spinning, weaving, knitting etc., usually with other women — now we just do these things as hobbies, typically alone.

It was hard work, you can see repetitive strain injuries on some ancient skeletons. But it was also social and satisfying.
