3 reasons why Direct mutual funds are better than Regular ones

1. Lower expense ratio - Direct plans do not include distributor/agent commissions. Typical gap is 0.5–1% per year (sometimes higher in equity funds)

2. Same portfolio, higher net returns - Fund manager, stocks, and strategy are identical. You simply keep more of the returns because less is deducted as costs

3. Stronger long-term compounding - The small annual cost saving multiplies over decades, creating a large difference in final corpus

A simple example - for 20 years

Assume Rs 10 lakh lumpsum invested in the same equity fund generating 12% gross return before expenses

- Direct plan (expense ratio ~0.5–1% → net ~12%): grows to about Rs 96.5 lakhs
- Regular plan (expense ratio ~1.5–2% → net ~11%): grows to about Rs 80.6 lakh

Difference after 20 years: ~Rs 15.8 lakh more in the Direct plan - purely from avoiding the higher costs. The gap widens further with longer tenure or SIPs
