Thoughts from a few weeks of traveling in Japan (Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Sapporo)
Pros
- [ ] The food was delicious. That said, sometimes the restaurants I stumbled upon while walking down the street were actually better than the ones with high ratings on Tabelog.
- [ ] The night views are absolutely stunning. Especially in Tokyo, the lights from the massive buildings stretching all the way to the horizon were overwhelming.
- [ ] Food from convenience stores and supermarkets was cheap and tasty. (Except Tenpura.)
- [ ] The staff were incredibly friendly (Japanese staff only…).Even though they must see tourists every day, they served me without showing the slightest sign of annoyance. Maybe because I spoke in japanese?
- [ ] The restrooms are incredibly clean. Whether I went to a market or a convenience store, Japan was the only place where public restrooms were this clean.
- [ ] There’s a lot to see. Even without going to famous tourist spots, there was plenty to see just walking down the street.
- [ ] The quality of cup noodles is insane. Especially the texture of the noodles and the richness of the broth are unmatched.
Cons
- [ ] There were way too many Westerners and tourists. I know it’s a bit hypocritical for me to say this since I was a tourist myself, but I came to enjoy Japan, yet it felt like I’d ended up in the “America of East Asia.” Even Kyoto, where I’d gone expecting Japanese culture and atmosphere… Ginza and Marunouchi seemed a bit less tho.
- [ ] They seem to be stuck in the past. I mean, insisting on cash payments and still requiring paper tickets. But I just couldn’t understand why they sometimes asked for both a Suica card and a paper ticket.
- [ ] Public transportation was a bit expensive and complicated. It was fine in the Tokyo area, but other places were a bit of a hassle. In some cases, taking a taxi was actually better value for money.
- [ ] Even for summer, it was fucking hot. I think it’s better to visit Japan only in winter or fall.
- [ ] Never buy anything at souvenir shops. It feels like they’ve added an extra zero to the price. With that money, go to Don Quijote, Daiso, or Book-Off instead.
