Why go to the gym when you can just play this piece? The technique required to perform this piece is beyond imaginable. I’m glad Berio didn’t write this, because I don’t think this would be possible on any other instrument.

All music should tell a story and this piece does that. The hard times where they struggled to find solutions during the atomic bomb testing are depicted by the uneasy, frantic, playing of the orchestra, and Oppenheimer offers the picture of their successes.

You can definitely hear that this music was influenced by jazz, which is clearly heard in the piano part of No. 25. No. 24 sounds like it was influenced by African American singing and patterns. The combination of genres makes for an interesting listen.

Did I miss a big time jump somewhere? This definitely brings a sense of church music, or sacred chant from many years ago. No.1 has beautiful harmonies behind a very simple, elegant melody. No. 6 reminds me a bit of Carmina Burana for some reason?

When I listen to this piece, I feel like I am being chased down a dark alley by a bunch of string players...EW! The dissonance is very present, but used in a brilliant way. At times there are singable melodies faintly behind the chaos. Pretty strange.

Unlike pieces of the time period, technical ability isn’t extreme. The simple melody makes for a calming listen. Sometimes dissonance sneaks its way in to perk up your ear, but never too much. Compared to other cello pieces of the period this is gorgeous.

West Side Story is so cool to listen to because he combined two styles of music into one. The atonal, aleatoric music and the popular new jazz style. It keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time. This music helped make this musical iconic.

In a piece like this, and not having an accompanist, it must be pretty tough to still be expressive. Somehow the vocalist is able to do so, and I think it helps a lot that so many obscure sounds are produced with the voice that seem impossible.

This piece is pretty tough to listen to. You cannot follow along because there is no sense of time or pulse. In this time period it’s in style to write pieces that are tough to listen too, and he nailed it here with so much odd rhythms and orchestration.

The unique instrumentation of this quartet makes you very curious but leaves you wanting more and more throughout the piece. Either the clarinet or violin has a constant glissando in the background going up and down that seems to drive it forward.
