Remember those 'defenders of women and girls'...?

Another appalling human rights abuse in Belfast last night. These attacks remain the mechanism of control by criminal gangs, who masquerade as community defenders to hide their own shady acts. Join with us in condemning these & demanding that they cease.
If you take out the children involved (the youngest child arrested was 11 years old) who wouldn’t have been known to police the percentage of adult rioters with previous DV history is actually higher than 48%
Another young man brutalised, with all the hallmarks of a paramilitary-style human rights abuse. Gunmen 'randomly' on the street - were they waiting for him or arranged to meet him there in a premeditated organised attack? This is control, not protection.

UDA loan sharks extorting money from woman whose son took own life over drug debt.
4 years after his death paramilitary money lenders still demanding weekly payments from his mum. life-over-drug-debt/a1789059077.html | https://t.co/x4pMu7zM7c https://t.co/auFLHtiltB
The reality of how criminal gangs, using paramilitary labels to justify their existence, hold communities to ransom - using attacks to ensure their controls exist & maintain their status. Making money by exploiting through fear & intimidation.
Together, we must call for an end.
Our campaign's contributor on this morning's @BBCNolan highlighting the brutal reality of these barbaric attacks. Blatant human rights & child abuses. Carried out by those who want to keep their power and control over their areas. Together we need civic courage to call these out.

@gymforthesoul It's not a strong statement. It reads as a copy and paste from other non-specific statements. Being involved in a totally accidental car crash may lead to 'potentially life-changing injuries'. This was a premeditated human rights abuse carried out with weapons.
Use of 'soft' language around these human rights abuses only contributes to playing down their brutality & significant traumatic impacts. The more our language fails to speak of abuse, coercive control & devastating trauma, then the longer these attacks remain part of our fabric.
@gymforthesoul "They do it to try and exert influence, or gain control of those they claim to represent. No one has the right to violate the rights of others."
@gymforthesoul 18th July - PSNI statement:
""It has left the victim traumatised and with significant injuries. People involved in carrying out this type of attack do not represent the interests of any community, nor do they contribute anything to communities," the PSNI chief added.
