@4x4RoadRunner01@loanchargeAPPG @lucyfrazermp Many congratulations, Lucy, on your appointment. I of course would be delighted to explain to you the wrongs of your two predecessors' policy in this area. I know you will recognise the problem very quickly and I am very confident you'll want to work out how to resolve it fairly.
HMRC has urgent questions to answer about its handling of #loancharge, says Labour leader @Keir_Starmer in a letter seen by @yorkshirepost. Sir Keir says Shadow Treasury team will work with #loancharge campaigners. Thank you @keithmgordon for your help.

Recent revelations about the Loan Charge have only confirmed what tax experts, campaigners and MPs have been telling the Government for many years.
I've written to the Chancellor @RishiSunak on behalf of my constituents who've been impacted by this injustice.
HMRC have just refused my latest FOIA request. Apparently, the information sought MIGHT contain about ME and therefore I am not entitled to see it. I have sought a review and also asked for the requested to be considered as a subject access request under the DPA.
I am somewhat surprised that 18m after Rangers, HMRC still express the view that the loans are taxable as income.
That view has NEVER been accepted by any court or tribunal.
HMRC won Rangers only because they abandoned that argument.

But an earlier sentence is also worth considering.
HMRC recognise that their spotlights are NOT seen by most taxpayers & only by the professional community.
HMRC defend themselves by stating they opened enquiries in earlier years and therefore taxpayers should have known.

@iphigenie@gregwrightYP Thanks for the sympathy but I feel I must correct you. 1. People did not gain from using these arrangements 2. People have not been caught. A retrospective tax has been introduced to transfer the tax liability from promoters to individuals
Another message from a Forces veteran affected by #loancharge: "At my lowest ebb I was 18 hours away from jumping from my local motorway bridge and ending it all, I only stopped as all I would do.. is leave all of these problems for my wife and daughters."
This looks like a question for @HMRCpressoffice to answer.
Are these "case studies":
- genuine
- based on genuine cases
- based on an amalgamation of genuine cases
- fiction
- other (please specify)?
With very many thanks for your elucidation.
So presumably action is being taken against the 'reprehensible ' individuals (to quote the Government -approved Morse review) who persuaded Duncan to get involved?
📣 HMRC has so far refunded £3.6m to taxpayers over the loan charge
⏰ More than 1,800 applications for a refund - delays mean 50 have so far received money
💰 Experts predict the final bill could exceed £65m

More depressing is those who disclosed to HMRC throughout & received an enquiry as a result, are not only not receiving a refund, they’re not entitled to one & they haven’t had their right to Tribunal reinstated to argue that tax they were manipulated into settling, wasn’t due!
HMRC tried to backdate a new charge by 20 years, bankrupting many.
HMT faked a review in Mar 2019.
Then an ex-Whitehall employee did a second ‘review’ & conceded 20 years was a bit much, we’ll just do 8.
Then HMRC delay & impede refunds to those who settled under original threat
Just finished binge-listening to @nickwallis's Post Office Scandal programmes. https://t.co/OokCNkFOfN
Thank Goodness for his tenacity & belief in the little people who dared to fight a treasured UK institution that had abused its power. The loan charge similarities are uncanny.
