New Zealand First fought to reopen Hillside workshop, funded the re-opening project, and commenced the wagon assembly programme in 2024, now the 1,000th wagon has rolled out of the Dunedin workshop and joined the KiwiRail fleet.

The rebuild at Hillside supported more than 200 construction jobs and Hillside now employs around 60 mechanical engineers and wagon assembly staff and 50 infrastructure staff.

This is what putting New Zealanders first looks like.
