For those confused with takes like “What’s wrong with streamers streaming at a streaming convention?” respectfully, you are misunderstanding the conversation.

Long one, sorry:

People are suggesting a ban not because they disagree with IRL streamers in general. They are, however, recognizing a very real issue accompanying incentivizing treating people in public as potential content. While many IRL streamers are ‘fine’ there are also those that habitually cross the line in a spectrum of ways that sometimes leads to violence. Anything on that spectrum is cut, edited and monetized and the more outrageous many times means more virality. We all understand this as we engage with it every day online. Twitchcon becomes the Super Bowl event for this sort of content. Streamers from rival platforms are everywhere looking to agitate. A good portion of people have zero desire to unwittingly become pawns in the viral/financial schemes of others in public that views them as content first, human second and sometimes cares nothing about their safety.

I say all this to add that socially drawing lines here as new entertainment emerges is important. An example being something like not taking streams into bathrooms. We draw lines like this with other public entertainment. Example, you can sing in public but you can’t you can’t follow ppl around with an AMP at full volume blasting in their ears. Some are criminal and others are common sense and some are about respecting others. So while I understand how easy/logical it feels to hand wave the thought of banning IRL streaming at a streaming event, it’s simply more nuanced than that and ignores the problematic elements altogether.

Now, you might say banning it altogether is throwing the baby out with the bath water and maybe it is, but the antidote to that is drawing common sense lines in the sand on what isn’t acceptable for people to do in these spaces while live streaming and taking a hard stance on that. I just don’t see that being done presently. In fact, the incentives seem to want to push things till it’s degrading and/or dangerous.

People are suggesting solutions. Agree with them or not, the problem is very real and very observable and we should be talking about it.
