Haiti could slide into civil war and even genocide if Prime Minister Ariel Henry returns to the country. This warning comes from Jimmy Chérizier, the leader of the G9 gang. Henry has been in Kenya negotiating a deal to bring Kenyan police to Haiti. This negotiation is part of another U.S.-backed intervention.

Henry is set to return to the country. However, he is currently holed up in Puerto Rico under FBI supervision. He is unable to return due to the extreme violence. This violence led his government to declare a state of emergency and curfew earlier this week.

The U.S. has been pushing for another foreign intervention in Haiti. This push aims to shore up the puppet government led by Henry. The U.S. Embassy has advised its citizens in the country to leave immediately.

The issue of gang violence is the pretext for the current intervention proposal. This violence is a result of the long destabilization of the country. It also stems from the destruction of institutions.

This situation is especially true after the 2004 U.S.-backed coup against Aristide. Aristide was Haiti’s first democratically elected President. He also demanded reparations from the country's former colonial power.

Numerous Western-backed interventions have occurred since then. These interventions have led to social collapse. This collapse, in turn, has fueled the rise of gangs. Now, these gangs control around 80% of Port-au-Prince. The city is under lockdown from five p.m. to six a.m. This lockdown is part of the state of emergency. It aims to crack down on protests demanding Henry’s resignation. However, the police are unable to enforce this lockdown. Numerous police stations have experienced arson attacks. Prisons and the national airport have also suffered attacks.
