One of the most depressing and enlightening experiences in my entire life was visiting my dad every other day to take care of my dog during my gap year, and realizing over time that my mom totally gaslit me over him.

Yeah, he struggled a lot, was an alcoholic for a long time (the sad kind, not the abusive kind, he was always kind to me and my brother), and he had a hard time, but he was also FUCKED over by my mom. He went to one of the nicest high schools in the nation, graduated 3rd in the school. I’m named after his best friend, who was valedictorian and immediately went to Stanford on a full ride scholarship. My dad could have had that, instead he accidentally got my mom pregnant and took responsibility every step of the way. Even when she divorced him and got custody, he stayed in our shitty little hometown that he hated and worked at a bar for 20 years, all so he could take responsibility for me and my brother and raise us as much as he could. I love my Dad so much.
