As Kenya heads towards the 2027 elections, we must turn data subjects into data citizens who know their rights and question what they see.

At the DPGSK Annual Conference Research Day, our Executive Director, Loise Mboo, challenged us to recognise how data misuse, misinformation, disinformation and malinformation threaten electoral integrity.

Through Ficha Uchi, we’re working with communities to strengthen data rights awareness and promote informed digital citizenship.

Everyone has a role to play: pause, verify before sharing, protect personal data and advocate ethically.

What are we doing today to prepare citizens for 2027?

It's day 2 of the DPGSK Annual Conference & Research Day, and we're excited for another day of rich discussions on the future of data governance, electoral integrity, and democratic participation in Kenya. The conversations continue to reinforce one key message: building trust in elections requires more than technology. It requires transparency, accountability, strong institutions, informed citizens, and rights-respecting governance frameworks. Follow the discussions virtually: https://t.co/IERXWtfGUZ

We are at the @DPGSK_Ke Annual Conference and Research Day for the next two days. From political data governance and election integrity to privacy, consent, information integrity, and public-interest journalism, the conversations are challenging us to think critically about how data, technology, and governance intersect in the lead-up to the 2027 General Election. "The greatest threat may not be the technology, but deployment without transparency, without accountability, and without meaningful oversight. We have all these constitutional frameworks that say we need free and fair, verifiable elections, and we use technology to verify. But we need to ask ourselves: are Kenyan elections a manual election facilitated by technology, or a technological election facilitated by a manual process?" ~ Dr. Mugambi Laibuta, Chairperson @DPGSK_Ke

"When does journalistic processing end and consent begin? Photos, videos, rally queues, polling, tallying, and counting are how citizens verify what happened. They are part and parcel of the electoral process evidence. Yet the same images can also be repurposed, manipulated, and weaponized in ways that raise new risks. The challenge for policymakers, journalists and rights advocates is ensuring that protections for privacy do not inadvertently undermine public-interest journalism and electoral transparency." @AbraMariita
