In January, MP Gladu said that floor crossers should face voters in a byelection to give voters the final say. I could not agree more.

I was on the ground in Ottawa in February 2022 as a lawyer, watching lawful Canadians confronted with extraordinary state power.

Today, the Federal Court of Appeal confirmed what many of us saw firsthand.

The invocation of the Emergencies Act powers "were overbroad to the extent that they criminalized the entire protest and limited the right to expression of protesters who wanted to convey dissatisfaction with government policies.”

This ruling matters. Peaceful protest is not a crime. What happened in February 2022 was not emergency governance. It was the criminalization of dissent.

Canadians were told there were 215 graves. Governments lit candles, lowered flags, rewrote history, and wrote cheques. One First Nation received $12.1 million in taxpayer money to exhume remains and conduct forensic testing

Four years later: no remains recovered and NOW Ottawa is sealing the progress reports as “confidential?”

Taxpayers paid for this and the public deserves the records, and the Liberal Ottawa swamp does not get to decide that accountability is optional

Four years after receiving $12.1 million from Canadian taxpayers to exhume the supposed graves of 215 children, the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc (formerly Kamloops Indian Band) has found no human remains. It appears the $12.1 million have not been used as intended: for excavation. Blacklock’s reports that the Department of Crown-Indigenous Relations now refuses to answer Access to Information requests about funds paid, claiming this information is “confidential.” Canadians are being denied access to information that goes directly to the truth of a matter of profound national importance. Transparency is the foundation of accountability and public trust. Secrecy of this kind does the opposite, undermining confidence in government and weakening its ability to maintain honest, constructive relationships with citizens.

The Alberta and Canadian governments have reached a historic agreement that will unleash the Alberta energy sector, create tens of thousands of jobs, and  attract billions in new investment.

This deal includes the potential for an additional 1.4 million barrels-per-day in pipeline capacity to the west coast, almost tripling Alberta oil exports to Asian markets.

Ottawa has also agreed to drop the oil and gas production cap and suspend the Net-Zero power regs, so Alberta can focus on reducing emissions through our TIER system and world-leading CCUS technology instead.

Although this is a massive win for Alberta and Canada, we will still hold the federal government accountable for keeping their end of the bargain.
