Hurricane Milton has rapidly intensified into a Category 5 storm with winds reaching 160 mph.

This dramatic surge, with the storm strengthening by 70 mph since 1 a.m. CT Monday, marks an exceptional period of rapid intensification.

Milton is the second Category 5 hurricane this season, joining Hurricane Beryl.

Category 5 hurricanes are rare, with only 40 recorded in the Atlantic.
