He was one of the toughest men to ever wear the Trident.🇺🇸♥️

Chief William "Bill" Chad Mulder served 20 years as a Navy SEAL, including time in the elite SEAL Team 6. Three Bronze Stars with Valor. Countless missions that saved American lives.

He retired in January 2017.

127 days later, on June 9, 2017, we lost him to suicide in Boerne, Texas. He was just 46.

His battle with TBI, PTSD and invisible wounds didn't end when he came home. Now he rests at Arlington National Cemetery.

His family made sure his death was not in vain. Congress honored him with H.R. 5649 The Navy SEAL Bill Mulder Transition Improvement Act of 2018 to fix how we bring our warriors home.

His story is why we must do better.

Harriet Cowan turned up on Clarkson's Farm with her lashes on and a certain kind of viewer decided that a woman on a tractor was a modern invention. The last time this country was genuinely in danger of not being fed, eighty thousand women did the feeding.

They were called the Land Army, and by 1943 there were more than eighty thousand of them. A quarter went into dairy. Others felled timber. Some were put on rat squads, because wartime Britain was overrun, and two of them are reckoned to have killed twelve thousand between them in a single year.

Most had never seen a farm. They came out of London and the northern cities into hostels with no heating, learned to milk by hand in the dark at half five, and worked forty-eight hours a week in winter and fifty in summer with no holiday of any kind until 1943.

The pay was twenty-eight shillings a week, and fourteen of those went straight back for board and lodging. The men working beside them on the same farms got thirty-eight.

Then the receipt, and it is in Hansard, 14 February 1945.

The Land Army women were barred from the forces canteens. Italian prisoners of war, under certain conditions, were allowed in. A member stood up in the Commons and said so out loud, along with the plain fact that these women had been treated as civilians when it came to privileges and as servicemen when it came to being moved across the country at a day's notice.

Two days later the director of the Land Army resigned. She went because the government had decided her women would be excluded from the settlement given to everyone else who served.

So the men came home to a gratuity, a suit, and the legal right to their old jobs back.

The women who had kept those men fed got a rail ticket.

Recognition finally arrived in December 2007. The badges went out the following summer to around forty-five thousand survivors, sixty-odd years late, by which point the great majority of them were in the ground and the rest were in their eighties.

And this is the country that now regards a young woman on a tractor as a curiosity worth a segment. Her great-grandmother's generation ploughed eighteen million acres, ran the dairies, and was told she could not have a cup of tea in a canteen that would serve a captured Italian.

Harriet is not the new thing. She is the oldest thing on that farm.

The year is 1275. The King puts a duty on every sack of wool leaving the country, and it works so well that wool tax becomes the spine of English royal finance for the next two hundred years. Your flock is not livestock. It is revenue.

The year is 1337. War with France needs paying for, so the Crown seizes thirty thousand sacks of English wool to fund it. The Lord Chancellor sits on a woolsack in Parliament and still does. Your coat, your blanket, your hat and the rent on the ground under all three come off the same animal, standing in the rain, looking at you.

The year is 1571. Demand is slipping, so Parliament legislates your hat. Every male over six who is not a gentleman must wear an English-knitted woollen cap on Sundays and holy days, or forfeit three shillings and fourpence for each day he goes bareheaded. This is what an industry looks like when it matters enough to be defended and is not yet clever enough to advertise.

The year is 1666. Parliament decides the dead can help too. Every corpse in England must be buried in a woollen shroud, sworn to by affidavit within eight days, on pain of five pounds. Your grandmother goes into the ground wearing the national economy. The law is not repealed until 1814.

The year is 1941. A research association in Manchester patents a fibre spun out of petrochemicals, and within twenty years it is your shirt, your trousers and your children's school uniform. It does not shrink and it does not need pressing. It will not burn either. It melts onto skin.

The year is 2018. Engineers report that roughly thirty-five per cent of the microplastic entering the oceans comes off synthetic clothing in the wash, and that a single load sheds up to seven hundred thousand fibres. The jumper is disintegrating into the water supply at a rate of about one jumper. Nothing on the label mentions it.

The year is 2020. A Welsh hill farmer films the clip off twelve hundred sheep and works out he will get twenty pence a fleece, while the shearers cost him over a pound a head. British wool that year averages thirty-two pence a kilo. Mountain wool goes for fifteen.

Now it is today.

Wool is a premium material, sold on its natural credentials at a price that never reaches the farm.

The fibre did not fall out of favour on its merits.

It lost to a cheaper one, and then got the blame for being expensive.

BENTON COUNTY, Ark. (KATV) — Austin McCollum, the Republican nominee for Benton County judge, was taken into custody Saturday and is facing multiple charges related to an alleged domestic incident.

According to Benton County jail records, McCollum was booked Aug. 1 on charges of first-degree false imprisonment, aggravated assault on a family or household member, and third-degree domestic battery.

Four South Florida store owners and operators are facing federal criminal charges after allegedly running a massive, years-long scheme to defraud the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) out of more than $19 million by trading food benefits for cash, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Miami announced Thursday.

A federal grand jury in the Southern District of Florida returned an indictment charging the men for their roles in trafficking taxpayer-funded benefits across Miami-Dade and Broward counties from July 2019 through May 2026, prosecutors said in a statement.
