Artists: Don’t sign a record deal without a release commitment clause. This forces the label to release your album within a specific period of time after you turn it in. Without the clause, they can shelve the album forever. But with it, you’ll have the option to exit the deal.
Every label, distributor, and DSP I’ve spoken to hates midnight drops. And so do fans. And yet artists keep releasing on Fridays to maximize first-week charting eligibility. Move back to Tuesdays, release at 11 AM, and let people sit with the music through the week.
