In 1884, Mrs Webb of 'Cherwell', Morland Road, 'put her home at the disposal' of the embryonic Croydon Ladies Chess Club. One of the first of its kind. She was encouraged by suffrage supporting Agnes Larkcom (grandma of celebrated horticulturist Joy Larkcom).
