It isn't that Max Velocity isn't important, but if you are unable to effectively exploit that capacity in a game specific task, it quickly becomes useless.
Note Rashford move as soon as the pass is intercepted.
Lateral Initiation. Rotated Torso. Curved. Controlled Velocity

Paul speaks about all things SPEED & discusses whether Heung Min-Son is faster than Usain Bolt?!

Couldn't agree more. Extremely overlooked. Very important in football, especially for CFs cutting into an accel in behind the CBs. These little moments define matches! Let's stop being so reductionist and thinking Max V etc is everything in preparing footballers #GameSpeed
Yes your 30m time is quick, that is great...
But can you effectively transition (cross-step & rotated torso), whilst observing play and remaining onside; time your cut step acceleration into a curved sprint, utilise that Max V, and cross a perfect ball whilst sprinting hard?
Centre Back Sprinting ⚽️🏃🏼
> How?
Rolling Accel ~70%
Curved Sprint ~80%
Torso Rotated ~70%
Non Linear Initiation Poistion ~40%
Cut Step COD ~50%
> Why?
Covering Sprint (Space/Player) ~60%
Balls Down the Side ~25%

'Is Son Heung-Min faster than Usain Bolt?'
It was a pleasure to feature recently on the Football Fitness Federation Podcast, discussing my research in Contextual Sprinting in Football.

You are 4x more likely to injure your hamstring in Dec. and Jan. in the Premier League!
During Dec. 90% of teams will suffer an injury, rather than the average of 15%. @BenDinnery@PremierInjuries
Son Heung-Min is faster than Usain Bolt!
Perfect example of the difference between sprinting speed and Game Speed. Bolt has more than enough capacity to be on the end of this cross but he completely messes up his approach; he narrows his options as he awaits the pass
Rarely do we Sprint Linearly in Football; goals overwhelmingly involve Curved Sprinting. Looking forward to seeing @AlbertoFilter research! Also worth reading @sarah_smc26 @IanBez
Do you work in professional football? If so, please could you take 5-10 minutes to complete a short survey examining feedback in elite football. Coaches/Managers: https://t.co/r3Mx3fi367. Players: https://t.co/LdDoR5mMeh. Performance Staff: https://t.co/b6aV5GlVuH. Please RT
If any players, coaches or performance staff could spare 5-10 minutes to help us with our research into feedback in elite football it would be greatly appreciated @LJMUFootball#20yearsSF https://t.co/WcVXooAlqA
Over 1/3 of Sprints in Football begin with some degree of Lateral COD (Cut Step)... Typically Transitioning from a Linear or Diag. direction into a Linearly Initiated Acceleration. Get out of the Sagittal Plane! *Pilot Work*
