Dolly Parton just passed away at 80 years old. She spent her final years as a CAREGIVER, doing what 63 million Americans do every day: caring full-time for the person she loved most - her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean.

Before she passed, Dolly admitted something that I found totally heartbreaking: while caregiving for him, she completely neglected her own health, skipping doctors visits and ignoring her symptoms.

I think Dolly's honesty points to three hard truths caregivers face. First, chronic physical decline, as AARP finds 1 in 4 caregivers say their own health has suffered. Second, the "widowhood effect," where a surviving spouse faces a significantly higher risk of death in the 12 to 18 months after their partner passes. And third, the sudden loss of purpose when intensive caregiving abruptly ends.

Dolly died about a year after her husband. She leaves behind a rich legacy and a life of purpose and helping others. May she rest in peace. 🙏

If you are caregiving for a spouse or an aging parent, please remember what they tell you on airplanes: put on your own oxygen mask first. Taking care of your health isn't selfish but absolutely necessary.

She incredibly compared herself to an old antique car that needed a new engine, transmission, new pistons and spark plugs.

“They didn’t say anything about my mental health” she joked.

She clearly had a ton of plans and active projects for this year, including a Nashville museum and hotel, writing, recording, getting on stage in 5 inch heels.
