@k_mickalova@OrevaZSN I teach biology but calculus knowledge isn’t any good if ss can’t apply it.
So an in-person test, tests the ability to perform calculus in that setting. I can teach ss cancer biology. But, can they connect the biology in a patient video? A case study? A drug profile?
@k_mickalova@OrevaZSN This is a complex issue that cannot be solved by reverting to in-person testing. Just because that worked for you (sample size = 1), doesn’t mean its great for all ss; or that it’s a great idea, supported by ed research or designed to meet the needs for the STEM workforce.
@k_mickalova@OrevaZSN Wow - you are riding on a very high horse! My standards for my bio-STEM curriculum are high and informed by educational research not ideology. If we want a well-educated, broadly representative workforce in STEM able to think outside the box we can’t rely on rote testing.
@lmn0pe@julianblacks_ 🙄 I wasn’t referring to ‘learning styles’ as in this student is an auditory learner etc. - I was referring to concepts embedded in universal design for learning. I actually read the Ed literature.
@julianblacks_ Thank you for laying out this thoughtful approach. I am experimenting on a similar track and the AI cheating has been less. I also do a creative project with my bio non-majors and a lot of the projects blow me out of the water. This generation can definitely do great work!
@lmn0pe@julianblacks_ But, and I am sure I am not going out on a limb here, but you have probably never deeply thought about pedagogy in any classroom or tried to actually read and apply the research about learning.
@lmn0pe@julianblacks_ Also pretty much automatically, a project like this gives space for every type of learner as they can choose something that goes with their strengths and how they best learn. It’s actually great and applies to learners of all ages, even college. Research bears this out, too.
@ScottShapiroUXD@SlopedPyramid@cblatts@dilanesper Thanks I will give that one a try. The biggest problem I have is that it just makes shit up. Adds info that isn’t there or interprets info wrong when all I want is a transcript. You should see what it said about the bacterial glycocalyx. Mind-boggling made-up science.
@maya_sen I had to institute no-devices-while-using-restroom-during-test because some ss claimed to feel unwell and used AI on their phone in the bathroom and wrote them down and snuck them into their notes, which they are allowed.
