On this day in 1967, Disney officially broke ground on the construction of the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. The site preparation required swamp drainage, clearing of land, and removal of trees. It would take 1,584 days and $400 million to Opening Day.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, Walt Disney's brother, Roy O. Disney, officially named the massive endeavor Walt Disney World to ensure the world would always remember his brother's vision and dream.

This event took place months after Walt Disney passed away in December, marking a transition where Roy O. Disney took the helm to bring Walt's ultimate Florida dream to life.
