@annbrough1@implausibleblog And in fairness to the electorate in many instances constituencies for some political roles are bigger than what would make it possible for voters to know much about a candidate other than what party they represent and what the values of that party are.
@annbrough1@implausibleblog Because research suggests that the majority of voters vote along party lines and do so in the knowledge of who the leader of that party is and hence who would become PM in the event of that party winning. The media are merely reflecting that reality.
@Rupert_Matthews But there's no election due until 2029 by which time an election would be due, so does that mean that the King could just, for example, appoint Badenoch as PM without an election? That sounds a bit Charles I-ish
@Rupert_Matthews They are experts in their field, who will presumably report back to Parliament where the elected MPs will have their say on behalf of their constituents. Having non experts on what is effectively an "advisory panel" wouldn't serve a purpose would it? And there's an ex PCC on it.
@dgriffinpix@DerbyshireCCC Whilst touring with Gatting's rebels would probably have been the main reason his test career terminated, I wonder how many players arrived less than 30 in their first 7 innings and then went on to become top players? Gooch maybe, perhaps Steve Waugh.
@Rupert_Matthews You have complained that the role has insufficient powers to be able control your own force, so is spending £2million on an election that two thirds of the electorate probably won't bother to vote in a good use of public money? What could a new PCC achieve in such a short time?
@withnailjones Yes but in the very first year of Thatcher's reign there were more thefts of motor vehicles than in the combined periods in office of both William Pitts!
