Here are the 5 opening hooks that helped get us to $100M+ in annual revenue , and consistently outperform everything else in paid video ads.
1. The pattern interrupt
Start with something visually or verbally unexpected in the first half-second.
"I threw out every supplement in my house last week."
It buys you the next three seconds. Which buys you the next thirty.
Most ads open the same way. The pattern interrupt breaks the scroll because the brain doesn't know what comes next.
2. The contrarian claim
Say the opposite of what your category says.
"Most greens powders are a scam — here's the one I actually take."
This works because it does two things simultaneously:
It stops the thumb. And it creates a permission structure — the viewer leans in because they sense they're about to hear something that wasn't sanitized by a marketing team.
3. The personal stakes opener
Make it about a real human problem before the product ever enters the frame.
"I was tired by 2pm every day for two years."
The viewer projects themselves into that sentence before you've sold anything.
You're not selling a product yet. You're selling a feeling of recognition.
4. The before/after frame
Show the visual transformation in the first 2 seconds — then back up to explain how it happened.
The brain finishes the story for you automatically.
You're not telling them what happened. You're letting them conclude it themselves.
That's infinitely more persuasive than telling.
5. The insider reveal
"Here's what supplement companies don't want you to know."
Whether or not it's actually insider information — the framing pulls people in because it promises access to something that was supposed to stay hidden.
Use this one carefully.
Overuse turns it into clickbait fatigue within weeks.
The meta-point that matters more than any individual hook:
If you're spending equal time on the hook and the body of your video — you're under-indexing on the hook by a factor of 4.
The hook is not the introduction to your ad.
The hook IS the ad.
Everything else is just the reason the hook was true.
