I hold the Agri-Food Innovation & Sustainability Enhancement Chair at USask. Interested in sustainability, agriculture, innovation, food & benefits of biotech.
🌱 The IPPC sets International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPMs) that help protect agriculture, trade, and food security from pests, but only when they are translated into effective national legislation and procedures.
✅ To support implementation, the IPPC Secretariat provides free guides, training materials and e-learning resources on topics ranging from export certification to phytosanitary capacity evaluation.

Today is the final day of the 2025-2026 academic year. Over the past 12 months, I have given 157 media interviews. Subjects ranged from food prices to trade to the safety of glyphosate. Nothing I enjoy more than communicating science.
This is fantastic news for science. No regulatory agency in the world believes there's a link between glyphosate & cancer & it's very reassuring to have this legally confirmed. Substantial benefit for farmers that rely on glyphosate for the production of safe, nutritious food.
Very pleased to have been invited by @SAIPlatform to speak at their event in Saskatoon. I'll be speaking about the sustainable improvements in Sask agriculture over the past 30 years.
Could #GeneEditing help reduce food costs and waste? 🤔
Gene editing could help farmers reduce reliance on inputs like pesticides while also creating foods with longer shelf life and improved quality - benefits that could extend from farm to table.

A tomato is never just a tomato.
•Some are bred for ketchup.
•Some for sandwiches.
•Others for delicious sauces.

I am pleased to have been invited to participate in Seed World's video series on investment and innovation in Canada's seed sector. In this video, I discuss the importance of total factor productivity and where Canada ranks. https://t.co/JAmD6Ui0yM
@SenatorRobBlack@SenateCA Congratulations on your induction into the Ontario Agriculture Hall of Fame Senator Black! Excellent recognition of your hard work and tireless efforts on behalf of the entire agriculture industry.
@simonmaechling This is truly a win for science within the EU. Given that EU eNGOs have been fighting this outcome since 2015, this is a huge defeat for the environmental movement. They've invested tens of millions of euros and failed to have an effect, which is fantastic news for everyone.
Fantastic news out of the EU with the announcement that gene editing technologies will be treated as conventional plant breeding, not subject to additional GMO regulations. This is a MASSIVE defeat for the EU environmental movement as they have fought since 2015 to prevent this.
A new study of organic and conventional farming on thousands of sites in Europe finds "Surprisingly, croplands under organic farming did not store more carbon than conventionally farmed croplands."
Myth: Non-GMO labels mean the product is healthier.
Fact: Non-GMO labels can be misleading. Many foods labeled “non-GMO” don’t have a GMO counterpart, like orange juice (there are no GM oranges)! GMOs are rigorously tested and proven safe.

Ag productivity is an important topic of discussion, especially as it has been dropping. In the 2nd blog on this topic, Koal delves into public ag R&D funding, noting it peaked in 1985 & that Canadian investments trail other competitive countries. https://t.co/plWmMHAGYl
Fantastic news for Canadian consumers! These gene-edited tomatoes provide 4-5 times as much gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which helps reduce blood pressure. It's great that Canadians are beginning to get access to more nutritional foods! https://t.co/bm9YfDML5H
Thanks to @SAI Platform for the invitation to speak at their upcoming event in Saskatoon. Looking forward to talking about the sustainability of Saskatchewan farming.
