When Alan Ball decided to sell his World Cup winner’s medal in 2005, it was not because he had stopped caring about 1966.

That medal was from the day he ran himself into the ground at Wembley.

The endless energy.

The cross for Geoff Hurst’s controversial goal.

And, for plenty of people, the man of the match in England’s biggest ever game.

But by then, football was not the thing sitting at the front of his mind anymore.

His wife Lesley had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

His daughter Mandy had been diagnosed with breast cancer within weeks of it.

And after three years of fighting it, Lesley passed away in 2004.

Before she died, Lesley had already spoken to him about what he needed to do next.

She told him to draw up a will.

And she told him to sell the medal, because he could not split it between the children.

The medal that had followed him since 1966 went up for auction, along with other pieces from his career.

And when people asked him about letting it go, Ball made it clear what mattered more.

“I have three children and three grandchildren.”

“And the most important thing for me is to make sure that they are looked after as well as possible.”

“Winning the World Cup in 1966 will stay with me forever.”

“But it is time to look to the future, not the past.”

The medal sold for £140,000.

For Ball, the memory was never in danger anyway.

He did not need the medal in the house to remember Wembley, or Hurst, or the lap of honour, or the way England had changed his life.

But he did need to know his children were looked after.

Three years later, Ball was at home watching Manchester United against AC Milan.

He had spoken to his son Jimmy that night and was still talking about Paul Scholes’ pass for Wayne Rooney.

“He said, ‘That’s what it’s all about.’”

“It was world class.”

Then later that night, a fire in his garden started up again.

Ball went outside to put it out.

He collapsed while fighting it with a bucket of water.

He passed away aged 61 years old.

Afterwards, Jimmy stood outside the family home and tried to explain how he wanted his dad remembered.

“I hope he’ll be remembered as an honest man.”

“A very patient man who did his best for his country and the various clubs he managed.”

“I hope he’ll be remembered as a loving father and grandfather and husband.”

“That’s how I’d like him to be remembered.”

Terry Fox, a 21 year old Canadian who lost a leg to cancer, began a cross-Canada run to raise money for cancer research. He ran the equivalent of a full marathon a day. He made it 143 days and 5,373 km before the spread of his cancer forced him to quit. He d ied June 1981.

My mother adopted me after I was abandoned on her doorstep—25 years later, after I had become successful, my biological mother appeared out of nowhere.

BREAKING: Holocaust survivor Alex Kleytman was fatally shot while shielding his wife, Larisa, during the Hanukkah terror attack in Bondi Beach.

Both Alex and Larisa survived the Holocaust as children, Alex enduring "dreadful conditions" in Siberia.

The elderly couple had been married for 57 years, had two children, and 11 grandchildren.

Australia is home to one of the largest populations of Holocaust survivors outside Israel.
