Braintree Town F.C. are extremely saddened to learn today of the passing of our former player and local Police Officer, Nicky Smith.

Nicky joined Braintree in 1998, at the age of 29, initially on loan from Cambridge City. He had previously enjoyed a career in the Football
League with Southend United, Colchester United and Northampton Town before playing locally with Sudbury Town.

He was virtually an ever-present in our team over the next four and a half years, making the central midfield role his own. He was a member of
the 2000-01 team that won promotion to the Isthmian League Premier Division, our first time at Step Two, as it then was.

Nicky left for Maldon Town at the end of the 2001-02 season having started 208 competitive games, appeared as a sub a further 9 times, and
scored 23 goals.

Living in the town, Nicky continued to be a frequent visitor and friend of the club over the intervening years.

The club send our condolences to Nicky's family and friends at this sad time.
